Another Death from Impaired Driving ?

Accident claims the life of Uxbridge teen

PICKERING -- A 17-year-old Uxbridge girl who was critically injured in a weekend accident has died of her injuries.

The teen was a passenger in a car that was involved in a collision with an SUV and then burst into flames at the intersection of Regional Road 5 and Westney Road in Pickering just after midnight Saturday morning.

The teen was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital with life-threatening injuries and police said Monday morning that she passed away.

Police say her name is not being released at the request of the family.

The 18-year-old boy who was driving was taken to Markham-Stouffville Hospital with serious injuries and three other passengers were treated for minor injuries at Lakeridge Health Oshawa.

Investigators say the SUV ended-up upside down, off the highway, in a creek.  But the driver and passengers did not suffer serious injuries.

Investigators say they're trying to determine why the car continued across the regional road before it was involved in the collision with the SUV.

They say road and weather conditions were poor at the time and alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

Distracted Driving is Impaired Driving

Written by Blair Carter

A motorist in Chatham was allegedly found reading while driving.

Early Thursday morning, a man was spotted driving with the interior light on in his car. The concerned tractor trailer driver called the Chatham-Kent OPP when the man’s car began straddling the center line on Hwy 401 police say.

OPP responded, and discovered the 24-year-old male driver reading a book.

“Distracted driving is obviously something that the OPP discourages” said arresting Officer Constable Aaron McPhail, “distracted drivers are four times more likely to cause an accident than those whose focus remains on the road.”

Constable McPhail said that officers have seen people reading maps on the steering wheels and once witnessed a tractor trailer driving down the highway with a DVD player sitting on the windshield.

“Drivers need to pay attention to driving 100 per cent of the time. At the time of night that this person was driving anything could have happened.”

Jonathan Guy of Merlin, Ontario has been charged with Careless Driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

Driving Impaired... not likely to go away

Written by Blair Carter

My daughter recently had to write an essay for one of her University classes, and based on the criteria, I suggested that she write about Impaired Driving. There is a wealth of information and the angle I suggested she use was simple. Given anything that is currently being done or anything that is even being considered (at least openly considered), impaired driving will never go away. It will continue to kill people, young and old until such time that we, as a society, have a major paradigm shift. Read on ...

Peer Pressure

Written by Blair Carter

September 20, 2010

The following is from an article that appeared in a Victoria newspaper. The author makes an excellent point about using peer pressure as a means to prevent people from getting behind the wheel of a car if they are impaired.

DURHAM -- Melanie Carter had left her car keys at home. She was not planning to drive that night. But decisions made the night of May 27, 2007 turned out to be fatal.Ms. Carter, aged 21, went to a party with some friends. Her plan not to drive changed when the person whom she intended to ride with had too much to drink. Ms. Carter herself only had a couple of drinks, say her parents, and opted to drive the car, its owner and one other person home.
According to her mother, Colleen Carter, the driving conditions that night were poor.

Embrace Life - Wear Your Seatbelts

Written by Gary

This video does not have words but says it all about wearing your seat belt. A very powerful message considering there is no dialog only body language. Take note that your seat belt is your lifeline in most accidents. It could make the difference between life and death or very serious injuries.
