On May 27, 2007, our daughter Melanie Carter was killed in a car accident that should never have been given the chance to happen. Many factors, including speed, unfamiliarity with the vehicle she was driving, road conditions, cell phone use and alcohol were all catalysts in her death. She was only 21 years old, an age when she should have been making plans for the future, setting her sights on attaining her goals (of which she had many), and generally enjoying what can easily be argued to be the best years of one's life. She made a fatal mistake that night and all those hopes, dreams and goals were lost forever. We hope and pray that, through the work of Safe and Sober Canada, her story will be heard, and that others may be spared the immeasurable pain of the senseless loss of a daughter or son.
