Driving Impaired... not likely to go away

Written by Blair Carter

My daughter recently had to write an essay for one of her University classes, and based on the criteria, I suggested that she write about Impaired Driving. There is a wealth of information and the angle I suggested she use was simple. Given anything that is currently being done or anything that is even being considered (at least openly considered), impaired driving will never go away. It will continue to kill people, young and old until such time that we, as a society, have a major paradigm shift. Read on ...

The topic was vetoed by her professor, not because it was irrelevant or un-interesting, but just because it wasnt a good fit for the course. Thats fine - she chose another topic. No biggie. But it got me thinking. How true was this ? Would impaired driving ever go away ?  Are we all too stupid as a people to learn from other's mistakes ? Are the only people who ever really care about this problem (or for that matter ANY problem we face on this planet) simply the ones directly affected - the ones who, like us, have lost a child, or a sibling, or a parent or friend to a drinking and driving - a.k.a "impaired driving" - accident ?

This is a very large topic, but it seems that it bears more investigation and input. I would encourage anyone reading this to comment, write a blog post, or shoot me an email. Do you agree, do you disagree? Am I just becoming too cynical? Personally, I think there will always be a section of society that will never get it. Am I wrong ? I dont think so...

I will compile the answers and will add articles based on these and on my own investigations. I hope I'm wrong. Statistics would say otherwise. What do you think ?
